Education - Connecting learning to life through service - Lewis-Clark Service Corps AmeriCorps/AmeriCorps VISTA

The mission of Lewis-Clark Service Corps is to help improve school success for ‘at-risk’ Idaho students and to assist teachers, students and their families to plan for a successful future. Through the ethic of service and human compassion of Lewis-Clark Service Corps members, Idaho students – from kindergarten through college and beyond – become excited to learn, experience success in school, feel good about their futures and realize they are confident, caring individuals who can serve their communities.

Lewis-Clark Service Corps AmeriCorps partners with organizations in 21 communities throughout Idaho. Working one-on-one and in small groups, members tutor and mentor students in public and charter schools, colleges and universities, faith-based and non-profit organizations, correctional facilities, probation and parole programs, and agencies focused on science, technology, engineering and math. Members assist teachers by coordinating literacy and math programs, supporting before- and after-school tutoring centers, and leading service-learning activities.

Since 1994, Lewis-Clark Service Corps has recruited and trained 1034 AmeriCorps members who worked with more than 135,000 academically at-risk students. More than 65% of who demonstrated academic improvement. More than 2,000 students have worked toward or received a GED with the assistance of our members.

It doesn’t stop there.

In support of National Days of Service members recruited an additional 18,500 community volunteers who served 43,018 hours meeting compelling community needs.

Lewis-Clark Service Corps is proud to have developed and spearheaded the now statewide AmeriCorps-based service project “Idaho@play”. The second annual “idaho@play” projects take place this year during Idaho AmeriCorps Week, May 7-14, 2012. Members and volunteers will gather in 15 communities across Idaho to refurbish existing playgrounds and parks while celebrate play through neighborhood field days and other outdoor activities.

Additionally, Lewis-Clark Service Corps keeps AmeriCorps Alums connected to service through the Idaho AmeriCorps Alumni Association’s web and Facebook pages. Because of this, for five years AmeriCorps Alums have been actively engaged in Lewis-Clark Service Corps service opportunities and training events.

Thanks to the efforts of Lewis-Clark Service Corps, Lewis-Clark State College has been recognized by Idaho’s Governor with a coveted “Brightest Stars” award for Volunteer School of the Year in 2010 and has been included on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the past two years.

Through devotion to civic engagement and the dedication of its members, Lewis-Clark Service Corps has made an undeniable impact on the communities of the state of Idaho. Lewis-Clark Service Corps is a proven leader in National Service.
