Education - Amber Beck

As President Obama asks for a focus on creative solutions to engage students in math and science, Amber Beck has created Future Women in A STEM Career (Aviation, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). This program was launched in November 2010, shortly after Amber started as an AmeriCorps VISTA through Washburn University. Her innovative program challenges low-income girls to reach for higher paying jobs in aviation, science, technology, engineering, and math. All activities are designed to (1) increase knowledge about aviation and STEM careers, (2) increase confidence and core competencies in science and math, (3) build upon the strengths of each girl, (4) teach healthy competition skills, and (5) increase workforce readiness. From January through August 2011, Amber researched and studied national and local programs. In addition, she surveyed professional women in STEM careers, educators, and low-income girls. Amber also studied programs that are successful outside our target population including Dress for Success Wichita Inc. and the Girl Scouts. Amber believes that to be truly successful, the program needed to be intense, caring, and supportive. In addition, a program would need to have one-on-one mentoring and provides items in Success Tool Kits like netbooks, printer, and supplies. Her research indicated that two elements are key to the success of middle school and high school girls: the program needed to address the issues of confidence and competition. Currently, twenty girls and seven Champions (professional women in aviation or STEM careers), and two Mentors (college women in STEM studies) participate in the program. In January, the girls were asked to complete a survey. They stated: (1) “I look forward to attending the monthly meetings.” Response of “Yes”- 100%, (2) “I feel more successful after attending the meeting.” Response of “Yes”- 100%, (3) “I’m learning new information not given at school.” Response of “Yes”- 80%, (4) “I will try harder to get good grades in science and math because of what I learned from the program.”- Response of “Yes”- 100%. Amber’s program is working. Amber Beck is an AmeriCorps VISTA, the Executive Director and only staff person of Children First: CEO Kansas Inc, and the program director for Future Women in A STEM Career. Ms. Beck has a bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in management from Wichita State University. When Amber began her college studies, she completed a year of engineering coursework; however, she was unable to overcome barriers that exist for young women. Her coursework included an emphasis in non-profit organizations, accounting, and advanced math. Course projects included development of marketing plans for the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society. Her employment history includes non-profit agency work in event fundraising for the ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) Association, The Keith Worthington Chapter and Families Together Inc. Amber brings passion to help girls find aviation and STEM careers. She has a strong desire to make a difference for low-income girls.
