Disaster Services - Schultz Fire and Flood Disaster Response - Youth in Action AmeriCorps Members Respond

A devastating fire occurred in Flagstaff, Arizona on June 20, 2010, known as the Shultz Fire. The fire grew rapidly due to high winds, requiring the Coconino County sheriff to evacuate 748 homes, an animal shelter, and Sunset Crater and Wupatki National Monuments. More than 1,000 firefighters fought this fire, including personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and a Type One Incident Management Team sent to events of "national significance."

After the devastating Shultz fire in 2010, subsequent flooding impacted many homes, and the number is still being calculated.

In the spring of 2011, 100 hundred Youth in Action AmeriCorps members, AmeriCorps alum, other Flagstaff area AmeriCorps members, and community volunteers provided labor to assist filling a minimum of 300 sandbags, placing a minimum of 100 wattles, and correcting Jersey barriers for disaster recovery in the Shultz Fire and Flooding area during the weekends of May 7/8 and May 14/15, 2011. This assisted over 30 homeowners impacted by the Shultz Fire and Flooding. Many of the targeted home owners were identified with special needs and did not have the physical capacity to do the work needed to protect their homes. AmeriCorps members also engaged local youth, providing environmental lessons/learning to the youth volunteers involved in the project.
