Education - AmeriCorps, Krista Kingsbury CCSU Community Central Mentoring
Community Central is a collaborative effort between Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), the consolidated school district of New Britain, and the New Britain Downtown District to develop opportunities that allow students to become leaders within their community. Community Central gives the each student the opportunity to use their creativity and energy to help their communities as well as providing them an educational experience that challenges them to use what they have learned in the classroom and apply it. One of CCSU’s finest students, Krista Kingsbury, designed, developed and introduced the Community Central Mentoring Program. She created two pilot programs that offer different experiences. In 2010-11 Krista brought together 17 CCSU students to mentor 24 elementary school students in two New Britain elementary schools. In 2011-12 she increased the mentors to 23 and the number of mentees to 37. Every Friday afternoon both mentoring programs go into the schools to do activities with the mentees. These two programs have proven to be quite successful. The programs are clearly aligned with the CNCS strategic goal to improve educational outcomes of students in low-achieving elementary schools.
