Disaster Services - MLK Day of Service
Our LeaderCorps member, Alisa Cox, has proved to be an exemplary leader for AmeriCorps. She was the "right" choice for Indiana's first ever LeaderCorps from Scott County. For the MLK Day of Service, she worked with other AmeriCorps members to put on a Safety Fair for our county. Alisa then decided to apply for the MLK Day grant to help buy safety supplies for the event, which she received. Alisa organized 3 sites in order to reach the entire County. Alisa worked with the local Fire Departments, police departments, hospital, health department, schools, and various other community agencies to educate the community on safety topics. Topics included safe evacuations, fire safety, road safety, cooking safety, baby safety, etc. Additionally, due to the the grant Alisa wrote and donations she received, sites distributed fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, meat thermometers, baby bath thermometers, bicycle helmets, a car seat, beacon bulbs, etc. to members of the community at no cost.
Alisa has shown amazing leadership abilities in our community. She had people mobilized all over the county to assist with this Safety Fair. Since then, she has continued to use her leadership abilities to promote and organize Reality Stores at both school districts and a Transition Fair for students and their families with disabilities to connect them with future job prospects. Meanwhile, she continues to help the Partnership and AmeriCorps by designing and staffing various booths at fairs & festivals throughout the area.
We've enjoyed some very fine AmeriCorps members in the past. Alisa is one of those whom we consider "very fine." She brings a level of professionalism with all of her efforts and for that we are grateful.
Alisa will begin pursuing an MSW in the fall of 2012. Her leadership and organizational skills will serve her well; her passion means she will be truly effective.
