Healthy Futures - Expanding Healthy Food Futures in Duluth Public Schools

The Tomato Man Project, a coalition endeavor between the Duluth Public Schools ISD 709, City of Duluth Department of Parks and Recreation, Duluth Community Garden, and the UMD Office of Civic Engagement has taken the kindness of one man and expanded it into a movement. Alyssa Peoples, Minnesota Campus Compact Health Corp VISTA* member in the Office of Civic Engagement has been involved in the project from its earliest stages and has provided professional technical expertise in grant acquisition, partnership building, and logistics. In her position, Alyssa has been a vital partner in the project to teach elementary aged children about healthy eating, where healthy foods come, and to increase their self-esteem through growing their own vegetables. Alyssa has created new partnerships with local businesses and agencies and provided assistance in grant writing to secure funding to build gardens at each school involved with the project so that future children will be able to continue learning about healthy food and healthy food origins. For this year alone the project has secured over 4300 plant donations. Without her assistance, the project would not have come as far as it has or have been so successful in touching the lives of the children we serve.
