This program was recently recognized at the Red Cross Saluting Everyday Heroes event in Vincennes, winning the 2012 Health & Safety Heroes Award. The award recognizes a person or group whose actions have a positive impact on the health and safety of an individual or group of individuals in the community. The selection committee was impressed with the large number of people impacted by the program.

Working in Home Health Care I have witnessed an increased number of elderly being targeted for their prescription medications, especially their unused pain medication. This program allows them to dispose of those medications, which decreases their risk from medication theft. This program is worthwhile in so many ways.

I volunteered on at least 2 occasions at the Drug Toss and was amazed at how many unused medications people have in their homes. By offering this program it allows the public a place to properly dispose of their unused or expired medications safely. These medications would otherwise be flushed to contaminate our water or worse, gotten in the hands of a child or visiting gandchild. I am always approached and asked when the next Drug Toss is. This is a great & educational program for public awareness & safety.

I think this is great..As a senior I sometimes get a medicine that I cannot take and have nearly the full amount of the prescription left or I may take one medicine of a certain strength and then need to lower or add to the strength..How great it is to be able to dispose of these in a way that is safe for me and everyone..this is a great service for all of us..I highly recommend everyone use it..

I am involved with this program and it provides a great public service. It gets unused drugs out of the home and keeps them from being put down the drain and into our water supply. It keeps them out of the hands of small children. Everytime we have a drug toss there is no shortage of drugs brought in. I feel it is a needed probgram and very worthwhile.

Knox County, Indiana is an agricultural area. This program keeps pollutants our of our farm ground and water. Solid Waste Management properly disposes of the unwanted, unused and expired pharmaceuticals properly.

As a grain farmer in Knox County, I rely on well water for my home, machine shop and with planting. Septic tanks cannot remove chemicals from medications flushed. This Drug Toss program not only disposes of the chemicals, but teaches the public about what can happen when these chemicals are in our soil and water supplies.

This program has been a phenomenal success. Not only has it provided our community with a safe way to dispose of unwanted drugs it has provided valuable education to all age levels about the dangers of disposing drugs improperly. The fact that several retired RNs volunteer with the program is another plus.
