Economic Opportunity-AmeriCorps; Literacy*AmeriCorps Pittsburgh and Compass AmeriCorps Program Coordinator MaryRose Walko
As the program coordinator of Compass AmeriCorps and Literacy*AmeriCorps Pittsburgh, MaryRose Walko not only ensures that the missions of both programs are achieved, but also that members have the most positive and fulfilling service experience possible. Her belief in the transformational power of service, both for participants and recipients, truly exemplifies the spirit of AmeriCorps. Literacy*AmeriCorps Pittsburgh and Compass AmeriCorps, programs of Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, are very successful programs focusing on increasing economic opportunities for adults in Pittsburgh. Literacy*AmeriCorps provides educational and job readiness services to adults and Compass AmeriCorps provides social service support to refugees and immigrants. During the last program year, 35 Literacy*AmeriCorps and 10 Compass AmeriCorps members provided services to over 4,000 adults. Some examples of outcomes are: 77% of adults post-tested showed educational gains; 47 adults passed the GED tests; 146 gained employment, and 186 acquired health care coverage. The community impact of both programs is possible because of the support and encouragement MaryRose provides to her members and the feeling of community she creates. This starts with a comprehensive orientation and continues with bi-monthly Friday meetings, a member retreat, and service projects. MaryRose stresses team bonding and utilizes scavenger hunts, potlucks, and games to foster communication and sharing. Another crucial trait is her focus on reflection, regularly facilitating activities that allow members to contemplate how service impacts the community and themselves. Members finish their service year satisfied with the impact they have had on others, and satisfied with their personal growth. More importantly, members prove to themselves that they are capable of great things. MaryRose’s success in providing a positive member service experience is evidenced by the satisfaction of members. Both programs have phenomenal reputations based on word of mouth and MaryRose receives on average 200-300 applications each year. The average retention rate of the programs is 97% and an average 25% of members continue for a second term. Over the past 6 years, approximately 20 members have been hired by their service site organization or GPLC. MaryRose is helping build the capacity of the non-profit community in Pittsburgh by instilling a strong ethic of service in members. The best evidence of why MaryRose deserves to be honored for the impact she has on the lives of members comes directly from a member. Here are some words from a Literacy*AmeriCorps alumnus who sent MaryRose a thank-you upon completing his master’s degree and teaching certification:
“When I first stumbled across AmeriCorps, I literally had no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I was extremely confused, and did not really think that I fit in anywhere. In short, I didn't think I had much to offer. You and your wonderful program gave me an opportunity to teach with next to no experience. For that I will be forever grateful, and since then I really haven't looked back. So I just wanted to take a minute and say thanks from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for believing in me, and giving a guy a shot.”
