Healthy Futures - Missoula, Montana Senior Corps: Healthy Futures for Seniors

The 2012 National Service Impact Award gives Senior Corps in Missoula, Montana the opportunity to highlight Eunice Amaya a Senior Companion who has been serving in our community for eleven years. Eunice has dedicated a big chapter of her life to serving low-income seniors in Missoula County by providing respite care for their primary caregivers which in turn provides her clients with social opportunities, companionship and the ability to stay independent in their homes for as long as possible. Eunice will turn age 91 in July. Healthy Futures is the area of focus that best encompasses Eunice’s Senior Corps service. As a Senior Companion, Eunice has increased many seniors’ ability to remain independent in their own homes with the same or improved quality of life for as long as possible.

After retiring from an LPN career and raising her family, Eunice decided that she wanted to join the Peace Corps. At 68 she joined Peace Corps for 2 years of service in Africa where she worked in several orphanages. Eunice became a Senior Companion at the age of 80 and serves with Respite Care part of Elder Services at Missoula Aging Services. Eunice has been improving lives and strengthening communities since the onset of her career. It is with great pleasure that we nominate Eunice Amaya, Missoula Senior Corps volunteer, for a 2012 National Service Impact Award.
