Economic Opportunity- AmeriCorps- Ohio History Service Corps Stabilizing Cleveland through Preservation Awareness

Jessica R. Wobig is the Ohio History Service Corps member serving at Cleveland Landmarks Commission with AmeriCorps for the second year. She is a historic building surveyor. She makes recommendations for historic designation, which directly impacts local economic opportunity. Historic designation has brought over 600 million dollars of rehabilitation projects to Cleveland since 2006. Her work is aimed at target neighborhoods in need of stabilization that could be completed using the historic tax credit incentive.

She is able to provide the Landmarks Commission staff of two with the support necessary to better serve the City of Cleveland and greater metropolitan region. Her personal interest in sustainability has enriched the preservation planning activities for generations to come.

Her role has included the survey and inventory of six Cleveland neighborhoods of various architectural and economic descriptions and over 300 individual buildings. As an AmeriCorps member, the significance of increasing service and building capacity for the Cleveland Landmarks Commission has been at the top of her yearly goals. She has accomplished this by increasing communication of Landmarks within the city by providing outreach services to elementary and college students, as well as, interested local preservation advocates.

She leads conversation between the State Historic Preservation Office and the Cleveland Landmarks Commission. She is a trained justice talking facilitator, and her fellow corps members have benefited from her holistic and honest approach. The impact of the Ohio History Service Corps program is felt at the City of Cleveland, and the interest of preservation is steadily increasing.

Jessica has been accepted for the National Trust Preservation Leadership Training (PLT) 2012 in Beaufort, South Carolina. The PLT has a competitive application process, and she is thrilled to represent her service family at this national training event. As an AmeriCorps member, she attributes her success to the momentum of the national service movement and the power of serving others first.
