Education - AmeriCorps- Mentoring: From College to the Community

The Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) is a department at the University of Florida that works to enhance the education of students through meaningful experiences designed to prepare socially responsible individuals to create positive sustainable change. For the past two years, the CLS has had an AmeriCorps VISTA working tirelessly to improve the mentoring programs through recruitment and retention. The AmeriCorps VISTA, Angela Garcia, works directly with four mentoring programs on campus that pairs college students with K-12 mentees. Angela Garcia has transformed the mentoring programs to increase the number of student participants, improve attendance, and create a training component that will educate mentors on working better with students. This past academic year, September 2011- April 2012, the programs matched 370 mentors, totaling more than 6800 hours of mentoring. The mentors work with their students on everything from homework help, test prep, social skills, higher education, goal setting, etc. Assessments over the past two years have shown the amazing improvements that have been made because of Angela’s efforts. College students are realizing the importance of education for our youth and getting to experience a different side of their community, while mentees are getting the companionship of a role model and improving their academic performance because of it. In one of the programs, over 90% of the mentors agreed that being a part of this program has now made them more interested in volunteering with other youth programs. The programs are not only increasing the desire for volunteering among students, but also affecting their desire to further improve education. When asked how the experience has impacted them, a mentor stated, “I love these kids and I found my heart breaking for them and their situations as I left each week. Now, I have realized that I do want to pursue education, I have picked up an education minor and am interested in Teach for America because it helps kids specifically like those that I work with in ASG.”
