Education - AmeriCorps Colorado HIPPYCorps

Parents are their child's first teachers, and the home is a child's most influential early learning environment. Since 1994, the Colorado HIPPYCorps program has provided home-based, parent involved, early learning opportunities to thousands of vulnerable children and their families throughout Colorado, equipping them with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to prepare their preschool-aged children for success in school and life. Colorado HIPPYCorps members meet with families one-on-one, in the home, on a weekly basis, scheduling visits at times convenient for each family. Visits generally last one hour and include an entrance process (reconnecting with the family, providing children with an activity while the AmeriCorps member works with the parent, reviewing progress on the previous week's curriculum, and gathering data on child and parent progress), a role play (including member modeling of parent-child interaction activities with the parent), and an exit process (including follow-up instruction, confirmation of upcoming activities, and other parenting resources). Families are assessed at the start of their HIPPY experience, and progress in terms of school readiness gains, positive parent-child interaction and family functioning. Extensive research has found the program to have statistically significant impacts and sustained effects related to school readiness and success. In addition to weekly home visits, HIPPY offers monthly group meetings which allow parents to come together, learn, and share their experiences. Colorado HIPPYCorps members instill a lifelong ethic of service for families served by involving them in an array of community activities. Colorado's HIPPYCorps program, blending AmeriCorps with the evidence-based Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) model, has been replicated in nearly a dozen other states. HIPPY is a peer-delivered model, meaning that the AmeriCorps members of the Colorado HIPPYCorps program are recruited from the parent population/community served. With the majority of HIPPY families having less than a high school diploma, living in poverty, and many being English language learners, the blend of AmeriCorps with HIPPY not only creates a pathway for the families served to become HIPPY members, but it also provides the AmeriCorps members with development along their path to increased education and self-sufficiency. The post-service Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a tremendous value-add for Colorado HIPPYCorps members, most of whom did not see higher education as a tenable possibility. The Colorado HIPPYCorps program has leveraged match funding from a broad-base of supporters, totaling over 70% of program costs (with AmeriCorps funding comprising less than 30%). And, HIPPY is a cost-effective model that has been subjected to rigorous RAND Corporation benefit-cost analyses to show a positive return on investment and significant net benefit to society for each child served. In addition to financial support, the Colorado HIPPYCorps program has found success through rich collaborations with other early childhood and family support services, working closely with partners so as to eliminate possible duplication of services and to provide a comprehensive set of services and supports to families of young children. Altogether, the Colorado HIPPYCorps program is an exemplary AmeriCorps*State program with outstanding outcomes for families and children served.
